Description
Hazel Buds
Key notes
- Antisclerotic and antifibrotic
- Respiratory system drainage, especially the lungs
- Anticoagulant, normalising thrombus formation
Therapeutic actions
- Corylus avellana has an activity on all metabolisms with exception of sugars. It is one of the polyvalent remedies in gemmotherapy.
- Antisclerotic remedy that will break down sclerotic tissues.
- As a lung drainer it will restore the elasticity of the lung through its anti-sclerotic action.
- It has a polyvalent action on the pulmonary and liver tissue, allowing restoration of its elasticity.
- Anticoagulant properties, normalising thrombus formation.
- Stimulates erythropoiesis and granulopoiesis.
- Active on hypotonic sclerotic people.
- Seems to show a polarity with the spleen in traditional Chinese medicine.
Clinical indications
- Respiratory system: Restores elasticity of the lungs. It is indicated in pulmonary stasis and professional lung disease associated with sclerosis, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary fibrosis and chronic asthma.
- Hepatic system: Prevents fibrosis from progressing to cirrhosis. Corylus avellana constitutes with Juniperus communis (Juniper), one of the greatest remedies for cirrhosis. Hepatic steatosis (fatty liver). Liver related anger.
- Blood: Is active in hypochromic anemia with cirrhotic or digestive origin (intestinal bleedings). Hazelnut oil is also antianemic. Moreover, it facilitates the synthesis of red blood cells (erythropoiesis) in marrow. Neutropenia.
- Circulatory system: Corylus avellana is active in arteriosclerosis and circulatory stasis which lead to the occurrence of varicose ulcers.
- Overall hypocoagulant it is effective in thrombosis, reduces cholesterol, acts in necrosis of the extremities which can lead to senile gangrene.
- It is also a remedy for arteritis, especially of the lower limbs which can lead to gangrene.
- Nervous system: Corylus avellana acts on the nervous equilibrium, useful in depression, neurovegetative imbalances, dyspepsia. It is also efficient for headaches of hepatic or circulatory origin.
- Renal system: its action at renal level appears in the resorption of oedemas of the lower extremities (and seems to show a polarity with the spleen in traditional Chinese medicine).
- Other: reduces scar tissues, cellulitis.
Consider in combination with
- Alnus glutinosa, for chronic bronchitis
- Tamarix gallica, for hypochromic anemia
- Ribes nigrum, for cough
- Viburnum lantana, for asthma and emphysema
- Aesculus hippocastanum, for shortness of breath, dyspnea
- Sorbus domestica, for varicose veins, varicose ulcers
- Sambucus nigra, for intermittent claudication
- Rosmarinus officinalis, for liver related headaches
- Juniperus communis, Corylus avellana, for liver detox triad
Clinical experience
- Do not use if the patient is a tuberculosis or mycobacterium avium-intracellulare carrier (rupture of fibrous tissue may convert the carrier state to an active state of the illness).
- Never use in cases of lung cancer (may cause metastasis, unless it is used conjointly with chemotherapy).
- Use with prudence if given conjointly with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs – Celexa (citalopram), Luvox (fluvoxamine), Paxil (paroxetine), has the capacity to increase serotonin levels.
